Diary of an Edinburgher

Port of Leith Distillery!

Elizabeth took Archie out today, so we decided to pop down to the Port of Leith Distillery, where we've always wanted to visit. It's a unique distillery, because it's built UP and not ground level - an amazing construction. Right beside the Royal Yacht Britannia, and a handy tram stop. I booked a tour and we headed off.

We were shocked to see that Ocean Terminal, a huge shopping centre, which isn't very old, has been half demolished! I was last there for a Covid jab earlier this year.

The tour was great, starting at the top and working down. Don't ask me any of the technicalities, but suffice to say, it was an impressive industrial tangle of pipes going all directions, stills, huge steel containers, and important looking buttons and levers.

We then had a tasting of five different whiskies, which all tasted of alcohol to me, but people suggested wild and wonderful tastes. We also got to bottle our own wee sample of 'new make spirit', which we must have left in the cafe, as we don't have them now..But we’re not unduly upset…

We went up to the top floor for a snack. A very nice cheese board was served, with huge great doorstop slices of sourdough bread (Extra 1). Also some brilliant chips. And we had a wonderful view out over the Royal Yacht (Extra 2). The car park part of the building nearest us is destined to be demolished, and new flats built, apparently.

We began to realise that we would not make it back in time to welcome Archie home, so I arranged with Elizabeth that Abi would take him in. He loves going to their garden.
