Calne (Saturday 14th September 2019)

For my September series of Calne Walks the plan is to put the subjects into a wider context to show what the town looks like rather than just the subjects in it. Perhaps I should have been using my very expensive and truly heavy 15-30mm Pentax, but I have been enjoying trying out my vintage 19-35mm on a full frame camera for the first time.
My blip was taken very close to home near the start of the Town Gardens on Curzon Street (A4). In the distance you can see the Town Centre on New Road which continues off to Marlborough, while a left turn on the roundabout leads towards Swindon.
I veered off through some back roads however, past the lovely BT substation that supplies my internet, down to a short stretch of disused canal at Chaveywell, and off on a path that joined up with a cycle path that runs along the old railway line from Calne to Chippenham. I soon realised that I was on a far longer walk than I had planned. There was one opportunity to shorten the walk at a stile but something put me off taking it.
I stopped at a bench with a view East (just visible on the horizon to the right is the yellow crane that shows more or less where I began) to read awhile and continued to Black Dog Halt, which existed solely for the then Lord Lansdowne's convenience, close to Bowood House, his home.
I turned back when I reached the Millenium Bridge at the A4 where another stile leads to a right of way that follows the River Marden to Keevil's Weir and Berhill's Farm. The area above the river gets deceptively boggy and I got very muddy and soggy wading through it. I cut through Curzon Park (see Extra) and got back to a hungry Smokey at 1825 hr after a two-and-a-half hour stroll.

Phylea Carley - Baby Please Don't Go (2019)
When Big Joe Williams and his Washboard Blues Singers recorded this old blues standard in 1935, nobody could have predicted it could ever sound like this. Phylea Carley is a singer from Ocho Rios in Jamaica and has just updated the song, which of course got a major R&B treatment from Them back in 1964. This was playing on the radio on Craig Charles' Soul and Funk Show as I walked into the kitchen after my walk and I thought it sounded great. It may have been a slightly different version as he'd just finished a half-hour mix by DJ Smoove which this may have been a part of. Either way, I like it.
