Ullswater
I had a plan to walk from Bampton and bag a few Birketts on the north side of Haweswater. We drove down to Askham only to find the road to Bamptom closed (for 5 weeks!).. No matter, I took a 5 mile diversion to come in from the Shap end on a different lane.. Guess what, road closed.. I looked at the map and could see no way to get to Bamptom unless by helicopter.
So abandoned plan A and headed back to Askham where we stopped and hiked up onto Arthurs Pike. A strong effort perhaps assisted by determination not to let the day be ruined by roadworks..
8.7miles & 1600ft ascent.
This is the view just down from Arthurs Pike looking west over Ullswater, Hallin Fell centre left and the Helvellyn range in the distance.
