Sunday 29 December
And then there were two!
Roger and I decided to stay home this morning and watch our church service from home, since the choir wasn’t singing this morning. Also Philip was leaving us after lunch, so we thought we’d enjoy a few more hours with him before he returns to Florida. I fixed us a fondue for lunch, which we all enjoyed, then we left about 1.45 to drive him down to the airport.
When we got back, Inspent some relaxing time starting to catch up on blips, and reading some of my book for January Book Club. The Dictionary of Lost Words, by Australian author Pip Williams explores the themes of language, feminism and social change. The book is based on real events and tells the story of the compilation of the Oxford English Dictionary, and is set during the height of the women’s suffrage movement and with the Great War looming. It’s told through the eyes of Esmeralda, who is born into a world of words. Motherless, and extremely curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed, in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary.
