Between Heaven and Earth

There were interesting clouds in the sky when we got up that could have gone either way.a  layer of possible storm clouds with some fluffy white ones underneath. Weatherwise , things could have gone either way, and by the time we were organized to take Spike for his walk the rain ones had taken over the sky. We decided to go anyway and had a very pleasant walk up to Spike's meadow. He was beside himself, running around in huge circles, into the now water filled pond (good thing we just gave him a bath yesterday) and out again. His walks lately have been rather cursory, leashed affairs, so he was really happy to be off the lead and back in 'his' field. It did sprinkle a few drops, but not enough to spoil our pleasure.

The autumn leaves are still thick on the ground, carpeting the trail with fading glory. The toyon berries are out in all their holiday colors. I could envisage a Christmas tree with nothing on it but these berries, but of course they do a much better job if left to their own devices on their own tree.

We did a few chores around the house and I did some admin then it was back into the car to go to the nursery around the corner to get  a Christmas tree. These are mostly farmed trees from Oregon so I don't think they were too affected by the forest fires there which must have burned a lot of timber. The nursery would be walking distance from our house if we could cut through the fields rather than walking along the highway, but there is really no route through there and we wouldn't have made it home carrying a tree. John ever worried that he might have to deal with 'other people' thought it would be more 'convenient' to do it tomorrow, but we have never been inconvenienced there in all the years we've been going, and as it turns out, we were the only customers there, walked almost straight up to the tree we liked and were home again with it on top of our car in about 20 minutes. The fellow who tied the tree to the top of the car said he had never seen such a quick decision. We won't put it up just yet, so it is relaxing in a bucket of water until the right moment arrives to wrestle it inside....

Dana and Jim are coming here for Sunday Supper. We thought they deserved a break from cooking, and possibly from us, after all the work they did onThanksgiving....

It's always a nice way to end the week no matter where we do it.
