Gently down the stream

Derelict gate

A bit of a mixed-weather day but most of it damp and grey.  I didn't go far from home because of this and also because my local bus still isn't running on the weekends.

This is as far as I got.  Hyde Abbey gatehouse.  You can walk through the west side of it, but this (east) side you can't.  There are metal bars at the windows and entrance arches.  I always think of it as being doubly derelict because it's not only in no state to attract visitors but has been left like this for years and years with any large lumps of figured stone assumed to have once been part of the buildings just slung inside like this.  Rather a pity really, especially as it's almost the only piece of the Abbey left standing.  There are low walls built into the banks of a stream, and the small church that has alway stood outside the gate is still there - but nothing else.  In fact the building stones got widely scattered after the Reformation.  I have a few built into the flint wall at the end of my garden.

Many thanks to Marlieske for continuing to host the Derelict Sunday challenge.

The rest of the day has been remarkably peaceful and relaxed, which has suited me just fine.  Hope your day's been a good one and that the week begins well for you  xx
