I think this might be a cocoon of a burnet moth on a grass stalk. It takes about two weeks for the caterpillar to change into a moth so I am unsure if the three nearby still contained the metamorphising larvae or the remains of the pupae cases poking out.  Tomorrow I will check to see if they have changed.
