Today we met a couple of friends for lunch in Glasgow near the Duke of Wellington statue outside the Gallery of Modern Art. Since the 1980s it has had a traffic cone placed on top of his head and whenever it is removed by the authorities it is quickly replaced. Twelve years ago the council planned to raise the plinth of the statue in a bid to end the tradition but there was so much opposition since it had become an iconic image of Glasgow. Banksy said it was it his "favourite work of art in the UK", and the reason he chose to hold his first exhibition in 14 years in the gallery. Over the years the Duke has had various cones including a crocheted blue and yellow cone cover in support for Ukraine, one with the colours of the EU flag for Brexit and others illustrating current events.
Later we had a quick visit to the upmarket Princes Square which was originally a cobbled square between buildings then covered over with a glass roof and vaulted roof with the existing adjacent buildings incorporated. The centre inside is adorned with beautiful decorative craft work and since it was opened in 1988 it has won several awards including in 2016 being voted the best building of the last 100 years
