Different Times

Edinburgh is awash with pink.  Pink Stetsons, pink jewel encrusted  cowboy boots and pink sparkly outfits, all paraded on hundreds of young people in the city today.
It’s Taylor Swift mania come to town for 3 nights. Last night 73,000 people listened for 3 hours in the Murrayfield Stadium to her first concert. This will be repeated over the next 2 nights.
Considering my teenage years were spent listening to Michael Holliday and Perry Como, you can understand why it makes me feel well past my sell by date  having to admit I have never heard one single song sung by this lady. I believe she must be amazing- writing all her lyrics by herself and looking like the girl next door. Someone commented that they taught her lyrics in a poetry lesson. I wonder what Chaucer and Shakespeare would make of that.

Having just spent the last week commemorating another generation of young people of the same age dying in their thousands for their country , it feels a very quick transition to watching today’s young people having the time of their lives. I hope that they feel as my generation does that we are so extraordinarily lucky to have the freedom to sing along.

Daughter#1 and I watched the sparkly procession of young people from our Costa eyrie above Hanover Street but not until after I had blipped the Floral Clock in Princes Street Gardens.
