Lucia’s room
Last time I was in Rye was when we were filming Mapp & Lucia when I was at the BBC in 2014. Lamb House, where Henry James lived for nearly 20 years was standing in for Mallards, Lucia’s house. EF Benson creator of M&L lived there as well so we were in the right place. The house is currently referencing our shoot and the characters and this was staged as Lucia’s bedroom. They had done this because Queen Camilla had been here a few weeks ago doing a something about the books. I think it must all be a bit baffling to the average visitor although those coming in the door on this wet day did seem up to speed.
It was cold and wet all day and we got that slight listlessness that comes from tramping around unfamiliar streets looking for interesting things. That said we found some, Lamb House was a highlight, so was a fine fish lunch at The Standard a beautiful friendly gastro-pub. We visited some junk shops without finding anything except for a slightly mad conspiracy theorist shop owner who I meekly bought a hat pin from. I also bought a hat for the wedding from a lovely hat shop. Not too mad @Xtoph1!
In the evening we went out to a restaurant on Camber Sands called Gallivant. We had thought of staying there but they were draconian about us needing to eat there every night so we didn’t. That said the food was fantastic and the hotel was absolutely lovely so we slightly regretted it. We walked on Camber Sands before dinner which was awe inspiring. Especially when we realised it was only just past high tide and already the beach seemed vast.
Back to the hotel room at the George and checked on the two key elements. The collared dove sitting on her nest outside the window and the church tower with the quarter boys, two cherubs who chime on the quarter hours.
Have upgraded to full memberships so my first extra is a picture of Vikram on Camber Sands
