Peacock in the Park..........
.............well actually a rather startled one perched on the roof of an outbuilding of a rather swish hotel. A flock of pigeons had just flown over and he was very interested in them.
Peacocks may be attractive and impressive birds, but according to superstition, their feathers can bring incredibly bad luck. Because the markings on the end of peacock feathers resemble an eye, superstitious sorts believe this is a representation of the "evil eye", so bringing them into your house is said to be extremely bad luck.
In the theatre, it is believed that having any sort of peacock feathers on stage (as a prop, as part of a costume or part of the scenery) brings bad luck. There are many stories of sets falling down and other performance disasters when peacock feathers have been used.
However. in other cultures they are said to be lucky - warding off evil spirits so it just depends which one you believe in. For instance both Hindu and Buddhist cultures place a high value on peacocks as animals with great positive powers. In Asian cultures, this has led to peacock feathers being considered good luck.
Which ever way you look at it, there is no denying that their colouring is extremely spectacular.
