The 'Killing Post'

One of the more distressing places to visit in Popperinge. This is where deserters, murderers, and so-called 'Cowards' were shot at dawn.
Many of the cowards were no such thing, of course. After fighting, and suffering shelling, foot rot, and the depravities of living in trenches, it is no wonder they suffered from PTSD, which was not recognised then.
The death cell is right next to the post and, looking out of the barred window, you could look at the view and ponder on how your life is going to end. Extra
Popperinge is the town where new troops would arrive to be briefed and sent out to the front. It was also where others would come for rest and recuperation. At least they had 'Ginger' to cheer them up. See extra, she's an interesting character.
