Vimy Ridge

Today we visited the Wellington tunnels in Arras, France. I was also in Arras in 2019 when I found my Great Uncles name on the wall at the memorial cemetery. His body was never found, or identified.
The tunnel tour was fascinating. There were a number of tunnels connecting the existing quarries, all with different names..
From there we rode to Vimy Ridge where, for the first time, all three Canadian battalions fought alongside each other. It was, as all of the battles were, a very costly victory.
The Canadian government financed the enormous monument and the French donated the land where it stands, along with restored trenches, and a memorial visitors centre.
Canadian university/college students volunteer to conduct the tours overground and underground where there are also extensive tunnels. See extras.
Tomorrow it looks like we are going to Bruges
