Today's the day ...................... for a museum

I do like a good local museum - by which I mean, one that has firm roots in the local community. And that community is proud to support it and  have it as part of their heritage.  Dalbeattie Museum is one such museum.

It was the dream of local man, Tommy Henderson, to have a place to display his private collection of memorabilia.  It took several years and a lot of hard work and money-raising by a group of like-minded enthusiasts - but on the 4 April 1993, the ribbon was cut to welcome over 200 guests into the Museum for the first time.

Since then, the Museum has gone from strength to strength, and many more items have been handed in for display.  These have ranged from as small as a button, to as large as a black 'range' from a house up the Moss Road. A very rare item in the collection is a 100-year old washing machine still in working order.

I thought all you photographers might like to see a few of the cameras on display (see extra) - you might even have had one of them in past days?  Apparently, the big black Hasselblad camera bottom right is of the same type that was first to be used on the moon.  This one, although it no longer works, is valued at around £8,000.
