The Cosmos and the Marmalade Hoverfly

Today's the day ...................... to crush

The cosmos that I grew from seed are still a riot of colour in the garden - and some of them are taller than me now.

This hoverfly was way too busy collecting nectar and pollen to notice me taking a picture.  I think it may be an Episyrphus balteatus or marmalade hoverfly which apparently is one of the very few species of flies 'capable of crushing pollen grains and feeding on them'.

How they managed to find that out, doesn't bear thinking about ......................?!
