Scurvy Grass

Today's the day ..................... for Vitamin C

You always learn such a lot on blipfoto - and I think it was Knottman2 who introduced me to scurvy grass in a blip almost exactly two years ago.  It is to be found growing in places like saltmarshes, coastal cliffs and walls, and rocky, muddy seashores.  There's a lot of it at this time of year growing along the shore of Kirkcudbright Bay and even up into the estuary of the River Dee.

Apparently, it was once used by herbalists as a cure for scurvy - as its name implies - because it contains Vitamin C.  Nicholas Culpeper wrote of scurvy grass in his book, 'Complete Herbal', that its chief good effect is when used 'by those that have the scurvy' and that it 'is of singular good effect to cleanse the blood, liver and spleen, taking the juice in the Spring every morning fasting in a cup of drink'.

This plant had somehow managed to grow in a crevice of a bit of beach driftwood.  It reminded me of one those artistic flower arrangements that you might see in the W.I. tent at the annual agricultural show ....................!
