Balcary Bay

Today's the day ......................... to go up in the world

On the day that restrictions eased and businesses started opening up in Scotland, we took a drive to Balcary Bay.

The Balcary Bay Hotel used to be one of our favourite places to stay when we wanted to celebrate something and we felt like pushing the boat out (not literally!).  It's in the most wonderful location, right on the beach and with views out over the Solway Firth past Heston Island.

It was looking good today too.  It was open and ready for business under new management who recently took it over.  Unfortunately, I doubt we could afford to stay there now because it has definitely gone up market in the changeover.

Across the bay is another property which has also recently been on the market, for a cool £1.1M.  This is the one in the picture - Balcary Tower - described as a 'unique Dream House with seawater swimming pool and boathouse'.  It was built around 1860 by a Colonel Johnstone, the Laird of Auchencairn House for his French mistress who was also the governess to his children. It was recently refurbished and now has state-of-the-art mod cons.

Balcary Bay has obviously become the place to be ......................
