Jan Flayin
A stunning day again, sunshine all day and evening. Flat calm this morning, but a breeze picked up throughout the day.
With such a fine day, I've been outside pretty much all day. Up early, and had to hang around the house, waiting in the hydro man to come change our meter, he never turned up. I spent that time in the garden and greenhouse. Popped by Laura's garden, and then met my cousin Vicky's husband, Jan, in the peat hill. Nipped by Madeline's before tea. This evening me, peerie Brian and Sammy headed out on the boat, and headed to Papa. Mam, Laura and Megan popped by tonight. Feet up now.
Jan (Tylšar) is originally from Czech Republic, and moved here after marrying Vicky. He's taken an interest in casting peats, and needing some advice on how to start the whole process. I'm no expert, but I'm certainly chuffed to be asked to help out. He got his bank, and had already cleaned off the old heather. Next stage, flaying the bank, cutting the turf into manageable sizes, which will can be later taken off and put in the greff (bottom of the peat bank from last year's cut). The exciting part of actually casting (cutting) the peat is still a few weeks away, there could still be a risk of frost, which crumbles the peat. Jan busy flaying the bank, hard work cutting through the heather and roots. Taken along Dale Water burn, Levenwick.
