Hawks Ness Broch
A beautiful sunny day again, with clouds passing in the afternoon and evening. Looked a lovely sunset.
Up early, and got washing out after breakfast and a bit in the garden. Headed to friend Leanne's (Arthur), but she wasn't in. I parked up anyway, and headed out for a hike. Popped by Laura's on my way to work. 1pm start in the airport again, mostly meeting and boarding flights. All flights in and out on time. Eastern Airways had a charter arrive from Copenhagen. Walkies with Sammy, now time for telly.
I've looked at Hawks Ness broch on the map for years, finally made the hike out to it today, marks off another broch on my bucket list. The broch itself stands on top of the mound here. There's no real visible structural walls or tunnels showing, mostly overgrown with grasses, but plenty of fallen stones. These Iron Age structures will always amaze me. Was the name Hawks Ness linked to birds? Or was it a place-name changed when Ordnance Survey arrived here and couldn't spell the names? The building in the foreground is a later addition, a crø (sheepfold). Taken at Hawks Ness, Tingwall parish.
