Diary of an Edinburgher

A Culture fix?

Elizabeth took Archie out so we decided to go and have some culture. The Fruitmarket Gallery has been refurbished, and we haven’t been yet, so lunch in the cafe was booked (culture and food!) and we set off. The buses are all diverted because of a big fire on George 1V Bridge. The bridge may have had structural damage, so it could be long term. Quite a blow for the several cafes and pubs involved - including the Elephant House, which is always mobbed because of the connection with JK Rowling.

We had a delicious lunch (Extra 1) at the gallery and then had a look round the current exhibition. Sorry - but we didn’t ‘get it’… it looked like a pile of garbage - and that’s not just my opinion - that’s what it was all made of! Big pieces of scrinched up cellophane, cardboard, mirrors smudged with lipstick and nail varnish, towers of polystyrene…

The entire upper floor was covered in pink cement-like dust (Extra 2). Art, eh? However, it was free.

When we came out, we were about to pop into the hotel opposite with the nice rooftop bar, when some rather rude cyclists (Extra 3) rode by. Once again, I wished I had a RAPID camera wake up - I had my mask on, so had to fiddle around too much while the entourage cycled by. I only got the last two, fortunately/ unfortunately*

We had a nice rosé looking over the old town rooftops. A rather swish bar, which was very busy. Their temporary ‘sound system’ was a Robert’s radio, so of course I had to comment that actually, it’s fine without muzak, it’s called peace and quiet.

Town was mobbed! There seems to be a LOT of hen party type groups, and ‘silent disco’ groups. We walked miles trying to find our bus home, but we’ve got it sorted now.
