East Neuk Day Four
We packed up from our holiday cottage and went along the coast to Crail for we had a lunch date with a lobster. But first of all, we had a delicious scone (with jam and cream) at the Harbour Gallery and Cafe. (Extra 1) It’s always mobbed, with queues out into the road, but we were early, and got a seat outside with sea views.
After a wee stroll along the harbour, we got the table right beside the Lobster Hut (top left photo) and we were their first customers. Yum yum. There was a HUGE lobster in the big trough, and he had survived because he cost too much. But his fate was sealed today when a family came and bought him - £59 please! And he was boiled (hopefully, stabbed first) for half an hour for them to take away.
We also had an ice cream (they, unusually in East Neuk, had a sign saying ‘No Cash’). As we were sitting on their bench enjoying ours, the ladies stuck their head out and said, ‘Does your wee dog want an ice cream?’ And they handed him his own wee cone! (Extra 2)
After our lovely morning in Crail, we drove back along the coast to St Monan’s. Forthports had a mentioned the wiggly pier, which we had never seen (and no wonder, you have to go and search for it, and climb a big wall to see it).
Funnily enough, the first person we saw asked us if we knew where it was! A couple of Fifers we asked had never heard of it… but we all eventually found it. The chap turned out to be a professional photographer, and he was going to wait till the sun was better placed, and the tide was further in, to use his ND filters to get nice smooth sea movement. Alas, we did not. I did not fancy my chances of climbing up the big ladder on to a big high wall with a terrifying drop, so I sent JR and she managed no bother!
Alas, Archie was sick on the journey home, so he and I sat in the back seat as it was too sunny in the front, and he just put his head down and survived the rest of the way home. Poor wee chap.
We had a terrific few days in our favourite wee corner of Fife. The weather was fantastic, the scenery magical, we ate langoustines, crayfish and a traditional fish supper, we all walked LOTS, and Archie enjoyed himself (most of the time).
