Baby It’s Cold Outside

Which came in very handy this morning, when I wanted to defrost the freezer. I’d used up a lot of things in the freezer in anticipation, but there were still several items that had to be kept frozen whilst the defrosting took place.
Ordinarily, this involves insulated bags, ice blocks and blankets to try and keep things frozen plus a hairdryer to speed up the removal of the ice in the freezer.
But today, the weather app advised that the temperature outside this morning would remain below zero, so I simply stuck everything in a box and left it in the garden. Turned the heating up a notch in the kitchen and then just let things take their natural course. After an hour or so, ice was all gone and I was able to mop up the melt water and turn the freezer back on. Brought the box back in from the garden and - as hoped - everything was still frozen and went straight back in.
Then it was off to the supermarket to stock up on replacements for everything we’d finished off in the last few days!
We now have a fully stocked freezer again and you can actually access everything without having to hack your way through sheets of ice first!
It shouldn’t need defrosting again until the summer. But I don’t think I’ll get away with just leaving the contents in the garden then. Not unless climate change gets totally out of hand, in which case a build up of ice in the freezer will be the least of our problems!!
