Breaking the Law
Today I have been mainly living outside the law. Heading down the “Covid Corridor” (aka the M6 through Lancashire, Merseyside and Warrington) to Chester, I decided that it was best to get the journey over as quickly as possible and was cruising around 80mph most of the way.
Later on I went for a long run and the route took me into Wales for a kilometre or so. Pretty certain that is breaking some sort of law but as I haven’t got a clue how anyone could actually enforce it, I look on it in the same way as I do speeding on the motorway - everyone does it and it’s ok as long as you don’t get caught.
But then we come to the big one. If I’d stayed where I was when I took the photo, and my mum came out into the garden then all would have been in accordance with Tier 2 rules. But that wouldn’t have got her heating working. Or changed the clocks. Or investigated why the shower wasn’t getting hot. If she lived on her own we could form a support bubble, but she lives with my disabled sister so technically they are in a two adult household, capable of looking after each other. Except they’re not, hence the phone call to me.
Naturally, I did what was right - if not technically legal - and went inside for half an hour. By the time I left, heating was on, clocks were all on GMT and the shower was running hot. Do I feel guilty? No! As far as I’m concerned I’m providing care to the vulnerable which is one of the exceptions allowed under the regulations.
And that, your honour, concludes the case for the defence.
