Flying about

I found this fly on a hebe today and I don't know what it is so it seemed a good idea to photograph it. The only thing I can find like it online suggests that it might be a brown striped litter fly. I love those red eyes.

I'm hoping cabbagetree can identify it for me - or anyone else on blip who has any idea about flies.


ADDED LATER: - Litter flies are only about a third of the size of this guy so Cabbagetree suggests it is probably a bristle fly of some sort.
