Snarravoe Tounship
It's been a beautiful day of sunshine. A chill in the breeze when near the sea.
I ended up going out last night, and slept too long this morning. I finally got up and headed in to see sister Julie and family. After lunch, I headed to Baltasound for some retail therapy, all four shops. Me and mam headed for a walk in the afternoon, around the Snarravoe Loch, to Voeside and then to the old abandoned township. An evening with the family now.
I've planned a walk to this old township for years, and so happy I've finally done it. Wow, what an incredible place. Mostly abandoned in the 1930s and the last house abandoned in the 1950s. They've left a national monument, and should be preserved. The houses are starting to fall, but amazingly you can still make out the old runrig field system. I've done a bit of research, and some tremendous stories, mostly featuring a really notable character, Phemmie Gray, m. Kay. Not sure what house this is, probably Westerhouse, but I'm thinking the house behind could be the Barn, where Phemmie stayed. Snarravoe, north of Belmont, Unst.
