Out of order!
For some reason my entry for the 24 went into 25th without me noticing - I think because I made a collage and it won't let me change it. So this blip is actually for Thursday, the view east from Cape Wrath.
We left our beautiful camping place early to drive beyond Durness to park up. We had s half mile walk for the boat over the Kyle to get the minibus for the 11 mile drive on a rough track up to Cape Wrath, the mist north-westerly point in Britain. It was suitably bleak. We had an hour to walk around so we climbed the nearest hilltop for a great view along the coast. There were loads of white orchids. The whole outing took about 4 hours.
Back at the van we had a sandwich then headed south down the single track road - thankfully there were plenty passing places as there was s lot of traffic. Driving the NC500 is a thing to do now - from boy racers in sports cars, Germans on motorbikes and many camper vans.
At Laxford Bridge we turned off the Ullapool road, and headed south east towards Lairg again on a single track road, but this was very quiet. By now it was sunny and hot. We stopped st Falls of Shin and Bonar Bridge where Mr C used to go on holiday to stay with his aunt.
We had a pit stop in Inverness for fuel, then drove out to Fort George but the wildcamping info we had was out of date - we were not allowed to stop and max height gates were in place. We were getting quite tired and hungry so set off back towards Culloden but that also was not suitable. Our last chance before the noisy A9 was Clava Cairns just up the road from Culloden near the railway viaduct. It was perfect - quiet, sunny - and more 5000 year old burial chambers with standing stones.
Tomorrow we aim for the long drive home - and the family will be arriving the next day. I can't believe we have been away over 2 weeks. We had only 3 nights on small sites to get water and electricity but all the rest have been wild camps in beautiful spots. We have been so lucky with this trip and have loved every minute.
Thank you for joining us!
