Canterbury cathedral 2
Today I spent all day in the city. It is 40 years since I lived in the area and it took some time to reaqaint myself with places I already knew. I went back to the cathedral. Our Airbnb host kindly gave us some free passes. The cathedral is quite magnificent architecturely. The mediaeval stained glass is remarkable but so are two of the more modern windows. (see extras). The shrine to Saint Thomas Becket was destroyed by Henry the Eighth but its location is marked permanently by a lit candle. In the crypt there is a French Protestant chapel with services each Sunday in French. This dates back to Huguenot times when refugees were welcomed into the country. How things have changed! I also went into a Freemasonry museum where a couple of guides tried to convince me that the guild has opened up and is no longer secretive. I also went to the local museum which had many interesting artefacts. Feeling rather leg weary, we decided to go to the cinema in the afternoon and watched the French film 'Elle.' It was quite a challenging film but well made and gave us plenty to talk about as it covers several contentious issues.
