Exploring Day
A little bit of history, some exploring along the Jed River and a steady climb to the Jed River Cemetery.
Position high on the cliffs is a small cemetery overlooking the Jed River and out to the Pacific Ocean with Gore Bay nestled below. It was the first cemetery in the Cheviot County, a burial ground in the early days of Cheviot Hills Estate. It contains graves of many people who worked around Cheviot Hills as well as those to several victims of drowning. Seven of those were boatmen trying to load wool out to a waiting ship off the mouth of the Jed. There were also drownings from small boats landing supplies up the Jed River. The first recorded burial was in 1864 another (unknown) victim of drowning, the Jed Cemetery closed in 1936 except for relatives.
Largely unkept, long grass covering many graves and strangling headstones, a cairn with the names of burials and a seat which overlooks the Jed River, the wind whistles through the trees while calls from hawks and
gulls circle above this historical cemetery. Looking below we see an old barn position by a quiet running river, today it doesn't always meet the Pacific Ocean but gives a glimpse into the past, an image thats perhaps a little solemn with the mood of the sky - a little bit of history of days gone by.
Not alot of sun today, a cloudy morning with little silvery shimmers on the sea, thick clouds rolling by out to sea and thinner clouds made for dramatic skies over the hills, a changing sky throughout the day.
