Light Beacon

Shipwrecks were a common feature of Cheviot coastline. In 1966, southbound from Wellington to Kaiapoi, the coastal trader Paroto was wrecked here in thick fog, she had 90 tons of cargo on board.
Her crew of six were able to land safely and it was hoped that if her cargo could be landed with the help of a breeches buoy, it may be possible to refloat her. Two days after going ashore though, she began to break up and sunk.

In 1948 a battery-powered beacon was erected on the Point Gibson headland. The beacon is now fully automated.

The site also pays tribute to Grace B Hunter, who for 12 years, was the 'unofficial lighthouse keeper', with the placement of a seat in her honour looking out over the Pacific Ocean.

The view is stunning with the Seaward Kaikoura Mountain Range to the north, the late afternoon light touching the snowy mountains and the calm blue of the Pacific Ocean lies below, home to colonies of NZ Fur Seals.

It was a cold day, a little sun but mainly overcast. Hubby and I enjoyed some time at Point Gibson, then back to the comforts of our little cottage, cosy open fire and good hot food prepared in a tiny little kitchen - was fun :)
