Rothbury

A day wandering around the village, including the art gallery, an antique shop and the church.  As children we attended the little Catholic church and never even went over the step of the very beautiful and ornate All Saints church, with a wonderful 1200 year old carved stone font. I particularly liked the stained glass window of St Cuthbert, he looks a nice chap!

When I used to ring Granny on a Sunday, I could often hear its bells being rung for the morning service, as she lived in sheltered housing close by. You could also hear the village clock striking every quarter and it is lovely to hear it again.  In Thropton, where my grandparents lived for most of their lives, the church bell rang the Angelus at 12 noon so workers could stop and offer up a quick prayer.

A stroll along the river, the Coquet, later in the day, and we stood and watched an ouzle, dipping and diving, hunting under the water. Very nippy bird and fast flowing river didn't make for brilliant photos, but was fascinating to watch. There are stepping stones across the river, good substantial ones, so we were able to get some for lovely views back towards Rothbury and along towards Thrum Mill.
Bar meal in the Queens Head in the evening, where we got invited to join a team for the weekly pub quiz!  We didn't win, but we weren't last either!
