A Sunny Sunday
Today dawned sunny and washed clean following some much needed rain yesterday. All the weary looking plants perked up and sparkled, and the sky was a cloudless blue. A walk around some of Santa Rosa's oldest neighborhoods was like stepping into the past…small frame houses cheek by jowel with old brick warehouses turned soup kitchens, long silent stockyards next to the railroad tracks and well kept Victorians with front yards full of flowers clustered around St. Rose church.
We ended up in Railroad Square with it's basalt stone depot, two hotels, and Flying Goat coffee. As always, there were people sitting by the tracks with their coffee, but OilMan elected to sit in the little back patio at a table zealously graded by a single scrub jay who skirted around and above us, flying from the ground to the maple tree, from the maple tree to the handsome magnolia,, never more than three feet away from us and scolding ceaselessly. I think it was Ozzie who was upsetting him, but Ozzie was zeroed in on my cappuccino and strawberry scone and paid him not the slightest attention.
Once home again, OilMan planned artistic new plant supports for his pole beans involving bicycle rims and ropes, and made a little hole in his finger when his drill broke while making a trellis for his cucumber plants, I began yet again to try to reorganize my office/desk/sewing/painting and drawing space. Notes to self: put Band Aids in OilMan's garden shed, and admit that you are not ever likely to make a quilt again and pack the closet full of color coded baskets of fabrics off to the attic.
A walk through the field to check out the lumbering earth movers and bulldozers massing for battle will take us to Dana and Jim's for dinner.. We cannot see any of the building activity from our house, but I fear that when they swing into action, the incessant beeping required by some government minion on all backing trucks will resound through the neighborhood….
