Flowers Galore
In preparation for Mothering Sunday, they were everywhere. Floral bouquets, houseplants, orchids, both growing and cut, and there was a receptive audience.
In the supermarket early this morning, there was a throng of customers around the flower displays. Then a different shop around mid-day, but the same story. And then again, later in the day in early evening, again a different shop and still there were queues around the flowers.
In one place a stall bedecked with flowers set up on the approach to the store was doing a roaring trade. And in another, a market trader had sold out by mid-day.
It’s a willing audience of course, but commercialised beyond belief. Every mother will be delighted to receive flowers tomorrow morning, although sadly neither of us are able to recognise this day for our own mothers. And thinking back to years gone by I am not sure that this one-day family celebration was quite as commercialised as this.
But doesn’t that apply equally to celebrations like Christmas or Easter, extending to Thanksgiving and of course birthdays?
And who am I to question it? I delight in seeing the house full of flowers just as much as my wife.
