Perceptions

Shame that my local supermarket has decided to scrap its misting machines over herbs and vegetables after such a short time.
They were introduced with the latest revamp of the self-styled Market Street in the store just a few months ago and certainly added a fresh dimension to the perception of the appearance and freshness of the produce beneath the spray.
The suggestion is that the decision to remove the machines came as the result of boardroom changes at the top of the supermarket group, and that by removing them the stores were going back to basics.
That’s as may be but to my mind the removal is a detrimental step. Certainly I gave the bunches of herbs a miss today.
I welcomed the introduction of the misting technique. It is commonly used in supermarkets in mainland Europe, and while it can be argued that ambient temperatures are often much higher than here, the principles of keeping produce fresh in the store is no less pertinent, and to my mind appearances do count.

Sad day!
