Particular choice
Took a fleeting visit to the shops today, just to buy a loaf of bread. Not any bread, mind you.
It had to be gluten free, and the lady of the house who knows all about these things, presently favours the variety from Marks & Spencer. We’ve tried many versions over the years, but the availability of wheat free cakes, biscuits and, above all, white sliced bread is she reckons the most palatable — at least to her taste buds.
Mind you the choices for gluten free delicacies, even staple foods, is now much greater than just a few years ago. But look in any supermarket and sections for gluten, or allergy free product is still abysmally tiny compared with the space devoted even to many specialist cuisines.
There was one previous brand of bread we tried that simply fell apart slice by slice when you opened the wrapper; another which was best suited to being used as a door stopper, it was so dense, and my wife proclaimed, inedible.
In another bakery, albeit in Continental Europe, the shopkeeper steadfastly refused to produce gluten free bread, proclaiming it could never be real bread if not made with wheat flour.
Even the current favourite in our house is seemingly in limited availability. Not every M&S store stocks it, but it seems that the one we have been visiting most recently has come up trumps every time.
Although at a premium price at £3 for a small loaf!
