This railway scene reminded me of a comedy show theme which was sung by Su Pollard;

Oh, Dr. Beeching what have you done?
There once were lots of trains to catch, but soon there will be none,
I'll have to buy a bike, 'cos I can't afford a car,
Oh, Dr. Beeching what a naughty man you are!

(Paraphrased from the music hall song and the film 'Oh Mr Porter'). The film of course starred the great British comedy star of the 1930s, Will Hay, along with Moore Marriot and Graham Moffat. It was based on the book and play by Arnold Ridley - 'The Ghost Train', a copy of which sits just out of arms reach of me.

There is another connection to all this though - Arnold Ridley, apart from being an author and playwright, was also an actor and is renown for playing Private Godfrey in Dad's Army, which was produced by David Croft who also produced Oh, Doctor Beeching.

Which brings us back to where we started.
