Not Just Any Sunday
Today is NOT just a Sunday, but it is also our anniversary. This holiday weekend we're about 90+ minutes from home, 150 miles northwest, on California's coast in the community of Ventura.
In some ways it's been a rather subdued anniversary . . . cake and champagne did not seem obligatory, but pinching ourselves and taking a deep breath did as we acknowledged that the "I do" statement we had each said to the other 46 years ago when we were 15 and 19 contained a magic and a glue that today we acknowledge as miracle. It's been an amazing journey.
Here's today story:
Our daughter sent us a text early this morning to let us know that it was pouring rain at home. The sky was beautiful blue here. Then throughout the day we've watched the FaceBook posts of a couple friends who are spending the weekend in Oceanside which is south approximately 100+ miles south of here. They're disappointed that it is cloudy and cold. We've got no clouds but we've got plenty of breeze; we might even classify it as wind.
Mr. Fun woke early to watch the Formula 1 Race from Monaco and then the Indianapolis 500 Race. He was texting back and forth with our son-in-law and daughter about both races as I snoozed.
Once I was up and ready to go we had anniversary breakfast at a favorite little restaurant called "My Florist." I know it's a crazy name, but that originated in Arizona where the owner had another eatery and the building an originally been a florist shop and was a landmark, so he kept there name and when he opened his place here in Ventura, he used the name again. I enjoyed a delicious egg white, spinach, and mushroom frittata. Mr. Fun was thrilled that a large screen TV was showing the remainder of the Indy 500. For years we've shared our anniversary and Indy -- it's a tradition.
After breakfast we visited the Museum of Ventura County to see the "Rock N Rock" photography exhibit by Guy Webster. The collection "concentrates on Webster's innovative work in rock-and-roll photography, and features images of such legendary 1960s performers as The Mamas and the Papas, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones. A number of photographs in the exhibit have never before been on exhibition." We were so glad we had seen an advertisement about this display. We were married in the 60s and the music of that era greatly influenced our lives, so it was more than fitting to be viewing the photos of the many iconic musicians of the 60s on a significantly poignant day for us.
Next we crossed the street to the Mission San Buenaventura and paid for the self-guided tour. Of the 21 California missions, it is the ninth and last mission founded by Father Junipero Serra. From inside the mission museum I shot through the window to the lovely garden and the chapel across the way. Then we walked through the garden and courtyard to step inside the mission sanctuary. The chapel seemed like an appropriate place to visit on our anniversary. I refrained from singing "Going to the Chapel" but everyone is welcome to hum it. Later we drove to the Ventura Harbor to look at the boats and the water and just to doodah the day away.
From Southern California -- Happy Anniversary to us and when we're altogether next time, the two of us will order cake and champagne for everyone!
