I see lava flows.
I studied geology in Australia, everything we looked at was mega millions of years old, because Australia is geologically dead. Then I came to NZ where the land is alive; volcanoes in the north, and faults, with associated mountain building, in the south. I am here because of the mountains, I spend a lot of time in them and see much evidence of major destructive events. NZ is however sparsely populated so most events have little human impact .Having an understanding of why it - the earthquake disaster - is happening does not help the very human feelings of helplessness and sadness for those affected.
