Penshaw Monument.

A lovely sunny day and needing to get out, my Husband suggested a drive and a coffee somewhere, where I could hop inside on crutches.
This is where we found ourselves. Penshaw Monument, Sunderland's most prominent landmark.
It dominates the skyline and can be seen for miles around. It was modelled on the Greek Temple of Theselon, in memory of John George Lampton, 1st Earl of Durham, and was paid for by public subscription.
Penshaw hill on which the Monument is built is also round which the legendary Lampton Worm was supposed to have wound itself ten times.
There were no worms today, only walkers, and cows grazing nearbye
