Strange names.

Out for a drive this afternoon, we noticed this pretty entrance to a village in County Durham. That got us talking about place names, and we've got a few strange ones round about, such as NO PLACE and PITY ME.
I know there was a mine at High Handon, but why did it become HIGH HANDENHOLD? I'll have to do some research.
