thumb drum

i'd never heard of a thumb drum before i went to africa. but this was just one of many new things i was introduced to while there. it's an interesting little intrument. all handmade, hand carved. they are sold in little road side markets and the locals are more than willing to demonstrate how to use them. i can't say i ever mastered the playing of it....perhaps i'm too clumsy with my own thumbs. but those who know how can get the most glorious little notes to come forth out of the intriguing little thing.

i have used it more as a source of conversation and decoration.... and a reminder of the many people and experiences i was exposed to during my time in africa.
