Another day, another boat trip
At 9am this morning the sun was just about crawling above the horizon, lkewsie I had just about crawled out of bed and there was almost on wind. Ideal conditions to go archaeologising round the back of Eaval.
The image is of Kallin harbour - about 2 km from the house - and we are about to set off in the white boat middle top in the photo. The plan was to visit a site we had discovered a fortnight ago but totally unrecorded prior to that.
The site has a multitude of features but with layer sitting upon layer is not an easy one to read. Lots of decent structures still visibe, many more hidden under rubble and heather. The best features to my eyes are several parallel passages leading to round chambers, not dissimilar to the souterrain we visited last Tuesday.
In the afternoon we were joined by the local crofter who grazes has sheep on this area. A real local who has lived all his life - at least seventy years I suspect - in the same house and has only left the isles for holidays.
Asked the two most important changes to life on the isles in his time, the answers were tractors and mains water. I was slightly surprised by the first and he explained how much work horses were after they had finished their work whilst you could park the tractor outside the front door and go straight inside for a cup of tea in the warmth!
