The shady path
Today we walked the high path to St Martin de Canigou, the medieval monastery perched on craggy rocks in an impossibly remote spot high above the next village. The path took us relentlessly up about 750 metre of ascent but the views were spectacular. We saw the usual deserted cabanes and an orri before visiting the tiny church in Casteil with its statue of Jean of Arc, frescoes and a pretty stained glass window.
