Flowers For My Ladies

I went to the store this morning to buy flowers. It's Valentines Day tomorrow so I chose roses.

The store was fairly empty as I rolled my cart up to the checker. She smiled and as she was ringing up my purchases said "These roses are beautiful! You must be some kinda playa to be givin' roses to three ladies!" I explained that I was buying one dozen roses for my wife of 35 years. The other two dozen were for two lovely elderly ladies who had recently lost their husbands and would be alone on Valentines Day. The checker started to immediately tear up and bit down on her lip, turned to a co-worker and said, "Cindy...come over here. This guy is buyin' flowers for some ladies who have just lost their husbands...isn't that sweet?"

A third checker, a young black girl walked by and, hearing all this, said "I'm not married! You can buy me some flowers!" I just turned and said that my wife would probably disapprove of that...but it's OK to buy yourself some roses if you want. She walked away, but not before I heard her say: "I just might do that, yeah, I'm gonna buy me some flowers."
