Times Of My Life

Ladies Room

In October 1987 one of the three most embarrassing moments in my live occurred.

I had taken my 12 yr old daughter on our first ever foreign holiday to Calella de Palafrugell in Spain. We were in a beach-side restaurant having lunch, and it was so nice I asked the waiter to reserve a table for us for dinner that night.

Shortly after, needing to use the loo but having not even one word of Spanish, I was standing outside two very similar doors trying to figure out which was the ladies. Eventually I figured out the one I wanted, and I boldly entered to find myself facing the same waiter I had just booked the table with, and who was right in the middle of relieving himself.

Mortified, I flew out off the room, realising as I went that the illustration on the door was actually a man smoking a cigarette, not a woman applying lipstick as I had thought! Poor Abi got hauled to her feet and dragged, protesting, along the beach at a great rate of knots as I put as much distance between us and the restaurant as possible. Needless to say, we did not dine there that evening!

This little picture graced the door of the ladies room where we ate dinner tonight. No mistaking which sex is invited to use these toilets, though I suppose there could be some confusion as to exactly what you are being invited to use them for ....?

And as for the other two most embarrassing moments? you'll never get them out of me - never!
