My Life in A&E

Hamburg.txt - day 2

Left Dinkelsbühl around 9. We had some difficulties finding the cycle route out of town. Then we were faced with signs giving two different routes and hugely different distances to the same town. We ended up, after a chat with an old man, following the road and ignoring the cycle signs.

Met some cycling Italians who were cycling the "Romantische Strasse". We have realised that this route (which we are also following to Würzburg) basically takes you into all the wee towns and villages and isn't great if you just want to go from A to B. That's tourism for you.

After numerous hills, we reached Rothenburg ob der Tauber, where we had some lunch. This was followed by a huge problem getting out of Rothenburg (can you see a pattern here?). The upshot of this was that we ended up in the woods having to wheel our bikes down a really steep dirt track.

The minute I got back on my bike, I noticed that something had changed with my left knee and it had become really painful. This continued for the rest of the day - which was pretty hilly as we went through the Taubertal until we reached Creglingen.

From here, we were able to take the Gaubahnradweg (where this picture was taken) all the way to Ochsenfuhrt (or Ochsenfuhrt - the Lake District as I like to call it). It was great - smooth surfaces and essentially flat. Despite this, I had a bit of a crisis over my knee towards the end.

The route finished with a run along the Main Radweg into Würzburg, which felt like it was going on forever.

Got rained on a couple of times, but never for very long.

Got to the Kanu-Club campsite around 6. Noteworthy were a group of Fortuna Düsseldorf fans having a a high old time with beer and a small football shaped barbecue.

Walked into town and revisited the Sternbäck, where Biggs had curry wurst and I had flammkuchen, just like we did before!

When we got back to the campsite towards 11, the Fortuna fans were still chatting......

Total today: 115km. Running total: 289km (or maybe 290/1....)
