Newcastle life

Laing art gallery

Today we went into town for brunch at cafe Royal on Nelson Street for the first time. It was really warm and sunny so we had food outside. It's a lovely cafe with amazing looking cakes, would definitely recommend it.

Then we went to Newcastle city library for a look at my favourite local history books. This building opened in 2009 and the eastern side forms a glass box with comfy seats perfect to sit in on a rainy day. It really is a great library with a great selection of books and a café. I even bought a new book for my collection, called "Tyneside's Finest".

We then went to the Laing art gallery and I took a picture of this fine building to blip. This beautiful building opened in 1904 (with new glass entrance added later). I love the selection of oil paintings of Newcastle from the past, such as the paintings of the Tyne Bridge being built and paintings of the Tyne when only the High level bridge joined Newcastle and Gateshead (plus a medieval bridge that stands where the current swing bridge is). At the moment there is also a huge piece of art called Mariner 9, which showers a scene of what it might look like to stand on Mars in 200 years time. The image moves and is complete with sound effects- very interesting! We also popped into the cafe for a cup of Earl Grey tea.

Afterwards, we had more of a walk around town in the sun and had some burritos at Zappista. Then we went to my favourite cinema, Tyneside cinema to watch "the 100 year old man who climbed out of the window and dissapeared". It is based on my favourite book by Jonas Jonasson and although the move was very enjoyable, I still preferred the book.
