With my hairline receding at a rate of knots it's time to invest in a hat to protect my head against the three days of sunshine we have every year.

2001 was the year that guitar music got a shot to the arm via five skinny jeaned fellas from New York. I don't think it's overstating the mark to say that The Strokes were exactly what indie rock needed at the time - it opened to door for a whole host of new bands and established a fashion that quickly spread to the high street and indeed continues to be a ubiquitous look. There are a lot of people who dislike The Strokes and point out how there's not one original bone in their bodies and also highlight all the terrible bands who appeared in their wake. It's hard to argue against either point, but Is This It was a perfectly formed debut album - in and out with no messing. An album they never matched, but the impact of this one was enough.

I distinctly remember dancing around on a sofa, downing a bottle of red wine whilst proclaiming that Hard to Explain was the song that would reignite peoples enthusiasm for music and that everyone was about to hear their new favourite band. I was right of course. Falling off the sofa and spilling the wine everywhere wasn't quite as clever.
