Gently down the stream

7. Looking out

This is St Mary's at Avington, which is not only the village church, but stands on the edge of the ground of Avington Manor, where, it is said, Charles II parked Nell Gwyn when he came to Winchester (she was a fallen woman, the Bishop wouldn't allow her in the City!).

St Mary's is a fabulous church - plain glass, as you can see, in high Georgian windows. It was built of brick in the mid to late 18th century and is mercifully untouched by Victorian 'restorers'. It still has its west gallery.

Okay, that uses up my pathetically small store of church architecture knowledge! The modern churchyard is in a field on the other side of the road, but this old piece still has a few graves. Most of the stones were removed and laid as the rather wonderful path you see here.

Oh, hooooooray, weekend. I'm off to Brighton tomorrow for a big lunch with lovely cousins - and it looks like it will be sunny. Brilliant!!
Enjoy your weekends.. xx
