Highlander Mountain Marathon (Day Two)

The bagpipes started at 6am to rouse anyone who was thinking about a lie in. And five minutes later, a queue of smelly runners was gathering outside the portaloos.

By 7.30 we were on the hill again, this time running back to Glenfinnan over the rouhger ground to the north of the glen. Even though this was a shorter day (only 6hours, 1450m ascent), I found it tougher with the complex terrain, constantly rising, dropping and contouring round obstacles.

The finish was a dramatic jog under the arches of the Glenfinnan viaduct.

The photo was taken near the start, as we climbed away from Inverailort. The hills of yesterday's run are in the background.
