John Rylands Library

I was amazed by the magnificent John Rylands Library in Manchester today. This shot was taken looking up in the main stairwell.

The library, which opened to the public in 1900, was founded by the rather stern looking Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her husband, John Rylands. The building is a neo-Gothic masterpiece successfully blending old and new with its modern extension, incorporating original stained glass near to some 21st Century equivalents. I thought the building was more impressive inside than out, the exterior being dwarfed by some intrusive 21st Century commercial development.

A fine day in Manchester gave many other opportunities for street shots and helped me to discover the meaning of cool dentistry.
